History of 1700 14th Street NW
1700 14th Street, NW, built in 1903. Designed by Eidlitz & MacKenzie NY for the North branch exchange, Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company, it was a four-story Classical Revival-style brick and concrete structure with ground-level retail. As telephone service expanded through DC in the very early 1900's, such branch exchanges were added. They often included recreational facilities and staff reading and lunch rooms. The North exchange was the site of the Chesapeake’s switchboard operator training school, whose operators were known as the “Hello Girls.” North exchange initially serviced 1,973 telephone subscribers north of L Street, in Washington Heights, Columbia Heights, Eckington and Brookland. In the late 1930's, the property was expanded to include a Moderne addition on the north. A fifth floor roof addition in the 1940s resulted in the removal of the cornice. At some point during the mid-20th century, the storefronts were also removed and the first floor re-clad in stone with single windows.
