Home Preparation DC and Northern VA Hurricane Sandy
If you haven't already taken steps to secure your home and prepare for the possibility of power outage, perform the following if safe:
Clear gutters, downspouts and exterior drains (*gutters & downspouts should have been cleared already, do not get on a ladder in windy conditions!) and route water away from your home's foundation
Check your sump pump, get a battery back-up! Sumps run on electricity. When power goes out, sumps stop working when you need them most. A battery back-up is 100% necessary for sump pumps to be effective. Test your sump by pouring a pint of water into the sump. It should activate. Test your battery back-up by switching off your main circuit breaker while the sump is running. If the back-up is working, it should continue.
Secure outdoor objects Even on condo balconies and in garbage storage areas. Ariborne objects become dangerous in high winds.
Review how to shut off utilities in an emergency. Contact your condo management for inside shut offs in condominiums
Unplug electronics and appliances
Charge phones, laptops and tablets while electricity is working. Locate and have handy car chargers.
Locate important documents and seal in watertight bags for quick transport
Close and lock windows and doors. Secure or remove screens and screen doors
Remove window AC units
Clear basements of items that can not withstand water damage or raise from floor on racks or pallets
*Keep pets in safe, dry locations and store their food where it will not get damp. Obviously, pets should be inside the home with their families for the duration of the storm!
