New condos in DC

Famous in its own right, Dupont traffic circle is located at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue NW, Connecticut Avenue NW, New Hampshire Avenue NW, P Street NW, and 19th Street NW. Dreaded by tourist drivers, the butt of jokes in movies such as The American President, Dupont Circle is the hub of Northwest D.C.

Dupont Circle Metro Station is on the Red Line. Two entrances are located at the north and south ends of the circle; Q Street NW (north) and 19th Street NW (south). The south entrances are currently under construction (early 2012) while Metro replaces escalators.

About Dupont Circle District of Columbia

The Corps of Engineers began constructing Pacific Circle (Dupont Circle) in 1871 and pipes for water and drainage were laid under the circle in 1877 but would not be used until after the turn of the century.

Before the circle was chosen for Admiral Dupont's bronze statue--since the 1870s--it was known as Pacific Circle. It's possible this relates to a group of mining-rich real estate speculators from the West called the California Syndicate, and the circle's location on the west side of DC. The CA Syndicate purchased a large tract of land around the circle and built elaborate homes there.

Senator William Morris Stewart built the first in 1873--facing onto the circle.  "Stewart's Castle," or "Stewart's Folly" as it was referred to by some who didn't believe development would extend to the circle. In 1880, however, a duplex for two sisters known as the Hopkins-Miller House was built on the south side of the circle, and in 1885 James G. Blaine's Queen Anne home went up on the west.*
